A New Year comes!

I wish you all
Success, Prosperity and Happiness
in the New Year.

Years ago, I was told that if I wanted know what it takes to be successful in a career, find a person that has become successful in that area and study, then duplicate what they have done. While it may be a over simplification of the process. As the new year begins and you are considering resolutions. You might consider the information on the following page. Its called Five Habits of Millionaires. You can find it at http://career-advice.monster.com/salary-trends/Five-Habits-of-Millionaires/Home.aspx (click on this link, or copy and paste it into your web browser). Enjoy and consider for your long term benefit.

I welcome the recent additions to this distribution list. You input is always appreciated, and feel free to share this with other concerned residents in our community.

All the best in the new year,
Duane Dominy

English First, English Only Yes or No!
You may have noticed that all the media outlets here in Nashville say English Only. This terminology is at the request of those that oppose the effort. The group that started the ballot initiative calls it English First. Whatever it is called, it will make changes in Nashville and that decision is in your hands collectively. I hope that you will make an informed decision when voting.

I have discussed this issue with many residents. While not a scientific pole, approximately 65-75% have been in support of the the issue. That percentage has been declining over the last month but still remains in the 60-65% range. I have chosen to not take a side in the issue other than to provide information to those interested.

Early voting begins on Friday January 2 at Howard Office Building on Second Avenue. This will be the ONLY early voting location. I encourage everyone to vote, whether early or on election day Jan. 22. To find the full schedule use this link.
http://www.nashville.gov/vote/schedule_early.htm

For those interested in passing this charter amendment simply go vote. There is no organized effort to convince residents to vote for it. On the other hand, if interested in opposing the measure you can find ways to participate at the following links. Some of opportunities are even here in our district. I am providing links to websites on each side of the issue for your information.
(Read this part real fast it helps with the humor... The views and opinions on the following websites do not necessarily represent the views and opinions of this councilman. This information is presented for your education, agitation or entertainment, whichever you choose. You be the judge of the accuracy or benefit of what is presented.)

Maybe more neutral info
For information on what has occurred across the country simply google "English Only States." This may give you a less biased source of info.

While I have interjected a bit of situational humor with my disclaimer, this is a serious matter which will have long term affects on our city. The decision is in the collective hands of you and the citizens of Nashville. I have the utmost faith in the informed decision of citizens of our nation and our electoral process.

See you at the poles.
Duane

Shouldn't the headline below read "Parolee Arrested for November Robbery and Kidnapping in Belle Meade"? This occurred three blocks from Belle Meade Country Club. I think that if it had occurred in the 300 block of Harding Place that Antioch would have been used rather than South East Nashville. I plan to mention this to Don Aaron at my next opportunity. I've not seen how the TV or print news reported it. Although, their usual practice has been to take the press release title and run with it.
Just my observation. DD

Parolee Arrested for November West Nashville Home Invasion/Kidnapping

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE December 30, 2008
Detectives from the West and North Precincts this afternoon arrested an ex-convict on parole for robbery and burglary in connection with the November 23rd kidnapping and robbery of three persons from a home in the 4000 block of Harding Place.
Antonio D. Harris, 21, was taken into custody inside an apartment at 1408 11th Avenue South . Detectives believe Harris was one of five suspects who entered the home through an unlocked door and robbed the victims of computer equipment and money. The suspects then forced the homeowner, his 19-year-old daughter, and her 19-year-old boyfriend into the homeowner’s Toyota Highlander SUV. The victims were taken to two ATMs in the Green Hills area from where the suspects withdrew money. They were released unharmed in a subdivision near Hillsboro High School .
Gang Unit detectives recovered the Highlander December 2nd in the Edgehill public housing development. The teenage driver was arrested for driving a stolen vehicle. He denied any involvement in the home invasion.
During the course of the continuing investigation, detectives developed information linking Harris to the case. He is being charged with three counts each of aggravated robbery and aggravated kidnapping. The state is expected to file a parole violation warrant against him in the near future.
Records reflect that Harris received a seven-year sentence for two robbery convictions in January 2005. He received a four-year sentence for two aggravated burglary convictions in March 2005. Harris was paroled from the state prison system on June 18th of this year and registered with the police department as an ex-convict the following day.
At the time of his arrest today, Harris was free on $2,000 bond stemming from his arrest November 16th for allegedly stealing $259 cash from a safe at a Murfreesboro Road carwash where he formerly worked.
The investigation into the home invasion case is continuing as detectives work to identify the other suspects.

Jackson is charged with theft, evading arrest, and felon in possession of a weapon. He is being held on $21,000 bond.

Metro Action receives over $3 Million to help more families with energy bills
Additional Funds Prevent Program from Putting Families on Waiting List for Energy Help
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Metropolitan Action Commission received an additional $3.1 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) earlier this month, and it could not have come at a better time.
“In the past two years when we ran out of funds, we had to place families on a waiting list in hopes of receiving additional funding. It is very unusual for us to receive this amount of funding this far into the fiscal year, but it is greatly needed, especially this year,” said Cynthia Croom, Executive Director of the Metropolitan Action Commission.

Just before the Christmas holiday Metro Action reported that 5,498 families had received help with their natural gas or electricity bills. “The number of families we’ve seen so far has nearly exceeded the total amount of residents that we served all of last year,” said Croom. Last year the agency helped 5,993 families.

Shortly after Thanksgiving, the agency had totally obligated all of its initial allotment of $2.2 million that it received in July. The additional funding will allow the agency to continue to assist low-income residents with their energy bills during what appears to be a nation-wide economic crisis.

In addition to the increased funding, state Governor Phil Bredesen announced a leveraging project designed to enhance the impact of the energy funding. The leveraging program would allow Metro Action to match local partnering agencies’ contributions toward electricity or natural gas bills by 2-to-1. The Metro Action Commission has identified several potential partners that will also work with low income families to ensure these funds reaches as many residents as possible. Metro Action’s share of leveraging dollars is an additional $464,552. In all, Metro Action will receive $5.8 million in energy assistance funding this year. Metro Action anticipates being able to assist up to 8,360 additional families with their electricity or natural gas payments.

Energy assistance applications are available at all public libraries, the Nashville Electric Service and accessible on our website (www.nashville.gov/mac). Customers may bring the applications to the Metro Action office Monday through Thursday from 8:00 am until 3:00pm. Due to the increased amount of people expected for assistance the agency encourages customers to consider mailing in their applications to: Metro Action, 1624 5th Avenue, North, Nashville, TN 37208.
