A New Year comes!

I wish you all
Success, Prosperity and Happiness
in the New Year.

Years ago, I was told that if I wanted know what it takes to be successful in a career, find a person that has become successful in that area and study, then duplicate what they have done. While it may be a over simplification of the process. As the new year begins and you are considering resolutions. You might consider the information on the following page. Its called Five Habits of Millionaires. You can find it at http://career-advice.monster.com/salary-trends/Five-Habits-of-Millionaires/Home.aspx (click on this link, or copy and paste it into your web browser). Enjoy and consider for your long term benefit.

I welcome the recent additions to this distribution list. You input is always appreciated, and feel free to share this with other concerned residents in our community.

All the best in the new year,
Duane Dominy

English First, English Only Yes or No!
You may have noticed that all the media outlets here in Nashville say English Only. This terminology is at the request of those that oppose the effort. The group that started the ballot initiative calls it English First. Whatever it is called, it will make changes in Nashville and that decision is in your hands collectively. I hope that you will make an informed decision when voting.

I have discussed this issue with many residents. While not a scientific pole, approximately 65-75% have been in support of the the issue. That percentage has been declining over the last month but still remains in the 60-65% range. I have chosen to not take a side in the issue other than to provide information to those interested.

Early voting begins on Friday January 2 at Howard Office Building on Second Avenue. This will be the ONLY early voting location. I encourage everyone to vote, whether early or on election day Jan. 22. To find the full schedule use this link.
http://www.nashville.gov/vote/schedule_early.htm

For those interested in passing this charter amendment simply go vote. There is no organized effort to convince residents to vote for it. On the other hand, if interested in opposing the measure you can find ways to participate at the following links. Some of opportunities are even here in our district. I am providing links to websites on each side of the issue for your information.
(Read this part real fast it helps with the humor... The views and opinions on the following websites do not necessarily represent the views and opinions of this councilman. This information is presented for your education, agitation or entertainment, whichever you choose. You be the judge of the accuracy or benefit of what is presented.)

Against

Maybe more neutral info
For information on what has occurred across the country simply google "English Only States." This may give you a less biased source of info.

While I have interjected a bit of situational humor with my disclaimer, this is a serious matter which will have long term affects on our city. The decision is in the collective hands of you and the citizens of Nashville. I have the utmost faith in the informed decision of citizens of our nation and our electoral process.

See you at the poles.

Shouldn't the headline below read "Parolee Arrested for November Robbery and Kidnapping in Belle Meade"? This occurred three blocks from Belle Meade Country Club. I think that if it had occurred in the 300 block of Harding Place that Antioch would have been used rather than South East Nashville. I plan to mention this to Don Aaron at my next opportunity. I've not seen how the TV or print news reported it. Although, their usual practice has been to take the press release title and run with it.
Just my observation. DD

Parolee Arrested for November West Nashville Home Invasion/Kidnapping

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE December 30, 2008
Detectives from the West and North Precincts this afternoon arrested an ex-convict on parole for robbery and burglary in connection with the November 23rd kidnapping and robbery of three persons from a home in the 4000 block of Harding Place.
Antonio D. Harris, 21, was taken into custody inside an apartment at 1408 11th Avenue South . Detectives believe Harris was one of five suspects who entered the home through an unlocked door and robbed the victims of computer equipment and money. The suspects then forced the homeowner, his 19-year-old daughter, and her 19-year-old boyfriend into the homeowner’s Toyota Highlander SUV. The victims were taken to two ATMs in the Green Hills area from where the suspects withdrew money. They were released unharmed in a subdivision near Hillsboro High School .
Gang Unit detectives recovered the Highlander December 2nd in the Edgehill public housing development. The teenage driver was arrested for driving a stolen vehicle. He denied any involvement in the home invasion.
During the course of the continuing investigation, detectives developed information linking Harris to the case. He is being charged with three counts each of aggravated robbery and aggravated kidnapping. The state is expected to file a parole violation warrant against him in the near future.
Records reflect that Harris received a seven-year sentence for two robbery convictions in January 2005. He received a four-year sentence for two aggravated burglary convictions in March 2005. Harris was paroled from the state prison system on June 18th of this year and registered with the police department as an ex-convict the following day.
At the time of his arrest today, Harris was free on $2,000 bond stemming from his arrest November 16th for allegedly stealing $259 cash from a safe at a Murfreesboro Road carwash where he formerly worked.
The investigation into the home invasion case is continuing as detectives work to identify the other suspects.

*A photograph of Harris accompanies this media release on the Internet.

The 17-year-old driver, who is from Nashville, is charged in Juvenile Court with evading arrest, theft, unlawful weapon possession, vandalism, and felony escape from state custody.
Jackson is charged with theft, evading arrest, and felon in possession of a weapon. He is being held on $21,000 bond.

Metro Action receives over $3 Million to help more families with energy bills
Additional Funds Prevent Program from Putting Families on Waiting List for Energy Help
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Metropolitan Action Commission received an additional $3.1 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) earlier this month, and it could not have come at a better time.
“In the past two years when we ran out of funds, we had to place families on a waiting list in hopes of receiving additional funding. It is very unusual for us to receive this amount of funding this far into the fiscal year, but it is greatly needed, especially this year,” said Cynthia Croom, Executive Director of the Metropolitan Action Commission.

Just before the Christmas holiday Metro Action reported that 5,498 families had received help with their natural gas or electricity bills. “The number of families we’ve seen so far has nearly exceeded the total amount of residents that we served all of last year,” said Croom. Last year the agency helped 5,993 families.

Shortly after Thanksgiving, the agency had totally obligated all of its initial allotment of $2.2 million that it received in July. The additional funding will allow the agency to continue to assist low-income residents with their energy bills during what appears to be a nation-wide economic crisis.

In addition to the increased funding, state Governor Phil Bredesen announced a leveraging project designed to enhance the impact of the energy funding. The leveraging program would allow Metro Action to match local partnering agencies’ contributions toward electricity or natural gas bills by 2-to-1. The Metro Action Commission has identified several potential partners that will also work with low income families to ensure these funds reaches as many residents as possible. Metro Action’s share of leveraging dollars is an additional $464,552. In all, Metro Action will receive $5.8 million in energy assistance funding this year. Metro Action anticipates being able to assist up to 8,360 additional families with their electricity or natural gas payments.

Energy assistance applications are available at all public libraries, the Nashville Electric Service and accessible on our website (www.nashville.gov/mac). Customers may bring the applications to the Metro Action office Monday through Thursday from 8:00 am until 3:00pm. Due to the increased amount of people expected for assistance the agency encourages customers to consider mailing in their applications to: Metro Action, 1624 5th Avenue, North, Nashville, TN 37208.

Merry Christmas for the Dominy's

The Night before Christmas... Dominy style

'tis the night before Christmas and here on my desk,
is a desktop computer that's not been it's best.

For twenty-four days now it's failed at the start
which caused quite a pain down deep in my heart.

The problems weren't many, just quite hard to confirm.
Then waiting for parts made one wiggle and squirm.

My contacts and calendar were on it you see.
So I could not communicate, nor know where to be.

All's working fine now, and I'm glad that it is.
For now, I can continue sharing community biz'.

I hope you've been well and wish you the best.
Don't hesitate to call, to get things off your chest.

During this season, of joy, hope and peace,
remember the wise men who came from the east.

They came baring gifts as we do to this day.
To the sweet baby Jesus, who made us a way.

His birthday we celebrate tomorrow you see.
During this season, we wish you joy and much glee,
and a very Merry Christmas from my family and me.

With warm Christmas wishes,
Duane Dominy

News and Comments

Dear Resident,

We have had a historic election here in Tennessee and across the nation. Barack Obama is President Elect of the United States of America. His election gives me hope that Rev. King's dream of people being judged by the "content of their character", rather than the color of their skin is becoming a reality. In over one hundred years, our society has seen many changes and in that time one thing that has not changed, until now, is which party controls the Tennessee Senate and House of Representatives. It will be interesting to see what changes occur when the winners of Tuesday's elections are sworn into office. I hope you will join me in praying for the leaders of our city, state and country. Pray for wisdom in decisions, protection from those that mean hard and safety for our fellow citizens.

Tonight is the public hearing on the Bakertown/Antioch Pike rezoning plan. Be sure to come out and share your concerns for or against. I will be abstaining and will not speak for or against this as the plan includes my property. I do encourage you to come speak your mind. Plan to be there at or before 6pm as the bill is on the beginning of the agenda – fourth item on the public hearing agenda. You can park in the courthouse garage for free with a pass provided by the Metro Clerk. (Usually a small colored piece of paper) See me and I'll be sure to get you a copy.

Please mark your calendars and plan to attend the next district town-hall meeting scheduled on December 1, from 6:00pm until 8:00pm at the South Police Precinct. Sheriff Daron Hall will be sharing stats from the 287g program and we will have a representative from Metro Beautification present information about our recycling program. There may also be some other surprise guests.

I will be traveling most of November and may not be available by phone. I will try to check email while I am away and will be here to represent the district for the committee and council meetings.

FYI, I will be sending the police reports in another email as this one has many notices already. Please help spread the word and help keep our neighbors informed. Encourage others to sign up for this newsletter.

Thanks for your support.
Yours truly,

PARKS’ DEPARTMENT SEARCHING FOR CITY ’S CHRISTMAS TREE

Nashville, Tennessee ---Metro Parks is asking for help in finding the perfect tree to serve as the centerpiece for the city’s holiday celebration.

Metro Parks’ Horticulturalist Randall Lantz said the Parks Department is looking for a “30 to 40-foot Norway Spruce that looks good from all angles. We would very much like to have a tree that has grown too big for its current location. We know it’s out there! We just haven’t found it yet.”

Lantz went on to say the Parks’ Department would gladly cut down the tree, remove the stump, and plant a replacement tree if desired. If you have a tree that meets the criteria, call Randall Lantz at 862-8400 or email him at Randall.Lantz@nashville.gov.

Park Smart
A review of stolen vehicle reports in Nashville from Sunday, October 19, through Saturday, October 25, shows that 30 % of the automobiles taken (6 of 20) were easy targets because the keys were left inside or made available to thieves.
The police department’s continuing PARK SMART campaign strongly urges citizens to lock their automobile doors, secure any valuables and REMOVE THE KEYS.
Officers also urge citizens to SHOP SMART by not leaving purses or other valuables unattended in shopping carts, even for a very short time. An unattended purse is an easy target for a thief.

Halloween Truancy Sweep Nets 16 McGavock Students
Hermitage Flex officers conducted a truancy sweep of McGavock High School today.
Officers charged 16 McGavock students with loitering during school hours for attempting to leave the campus while school was in session. One adult was charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
During the truancy initiative, an officer in an unmarked vehicle watched for students who appeared to be skipping school. Uniformed officers then made investigative stops of those who appeared to be in violation.
The truancy operation is the latest in an on-going effort between the police department, Juvenile Court, and school officials to see that students are in school and remain there until dismissal.

Nashville Ballet Announces
Countdown to the Premiere of Brand-New Nashville Nutcracker

Nashville Ballet announces the countdown to the premiere of its brand-new Nutcracker. The old version of Nutcracker has delighted thousands of Middle Tennesseans for over 18 years, but the new production will bring a new twist on the classic story for the next decade of Nashville families. This version will be set during the time of the 1897 Tennessee Exposition, so the audience will be familiar with many local influences, such as the Parthenon and Shelby Bottoms Pond. Clara’s home is based on the interior of the Belle Meade Mansion , and many historical figures and families have been included.

Opening Night will be the hottest ticket in town with the celebration including two special events. All opening night ticket holders are invited to stroll through the 300’ foot tent, which will contain an 1897 Centennial Christmas Festival, “A Streetscape”, which will take you back to downtown Nashville as it might have been on a December night, just before Christmas, in 1897. Walk through the huge snow drifts as snowflakes fall lightly to the ground. The streets near TPAC will be closed for this one night only to allow people to tip-toe through the snowflakes, window shop at the stylized mercantile store fronts, and indulge in the aroma of roasted chestnuts on the Main Square .

Mayor Karl Dean and his wife Anne are the honorary guests for a Gala Dinner, hosted by Nashville Ballet supporters, at the prestigious Hermitage Hotel. This elegant gala pre-performance dinner will start at 5:30 with a cocktail reception. It will be a once-in-a lifetime event (the $500 per plate cost includes a premium ticket to the performance). For gala information, please contact the Ballet at 615-297-2966, ext. 30.
Nashville Ballet Artist Director Paul Vasterling visualized this more locally based concept and choreography for the new version of Nutcracker and bringing together a team of esteemed designers to bring this new show to life. The set design was created by Shigeru Yaji, costume design was conceived by Campbell Baird, and the lighting was designed by Scott Leathers.

Local production companies have been constructing the new scenery, props, special effects, and backgrounds. Mill Creek Associates is building a majority of the set and Drops Everything is painting the backdrops. Additionally, Akers Theatrical Fabricators is building the interior set of the parlor for the “Party Scene” in the first act. The production department at Nashville Ballet is creating most of the hand props for the performance, and Nashville Ballet’s Costume shop is constructing all of the children’s costumes.

For pre-performance fun, jumpstart the holiday season with Nashville’s Nutcracker Breakfast at the Belle Meade Plantation, Saturday, November 15th at 9:30 AM. Meet the Sugar Plum Fairy and other costumed dancers, enjoy a scrumptious breakfast, tell Santa what you want for Christmas, and peek at the interior of the Mansion to see the parlor. (The interior of the mansion is the inspiration for Clara’s home in Nashville Ballet’s new Nashville-based Nutcracker). There will many photo opportunities, along with a treat bag for each child.

The cost is $25 for adults and $15 for children. Please call 615-356-0501 ext 27 to reserve your family’s place. All tours of the Belle Meade mansion will be given proceeding the breakfast- be sure to confirm a time when making reservations. All reservations need to be called in by Friday, November 14.

News and Comments

Dear Resident,
There is plenty of blame to go around in Washington and on Wall Street for our current National financial fiasco. I thought about attempting to go over all the many curves in the road that has lead us here. I'll simply say it started as early as President Carter and involves numerous actions, reactions and downright bad choices made by numerous government and corporate officials. Now, we and our children may well be left with the bill for their choices. I have paid enough for my own mistakes and poor choices through the years. I've never been bailed out of my mistakes by government. And, I'd rather not pay for someone else's at the level we are being forced to pay in the current plan. That said, It appears something must be done to correct some of the errors previously made.

I think the best solution as well as recommendations for action by citizens can be found at
www.daveramsey.com, where you can see a one page solution. Yes, only one page and it will not cost taxpayers seven hundred thousand million dollars (also known as $700 billion or $700,000,000,000.00). (Please forgive the sarcasm.) If you think Dave's solution is appropriate, as I do, please send it to your US House Representative TODAY, as they are likely going to vote on something Friday. In the words of Forrest Gump, "That's all I've got to say about that." At least for now.

I want to thank Hattie Palin, owner of H&T's Homecooking, for holding a voter registration drive right here in our district at the restaurant located at 2371 Murfreesboro Road on Tuesday of this week. The food was great, company pleasant and over 20 people stopped by to register. If you know of anyone that has moved into the community from another state or county or just has never registered to vote, Monday, October 6 is the last day to register. You can call me or go to www.nashville.gov/vote/ to get a registration form. Please note, early voting begins on Oct. 15 and runs 'till Oct. 30.

I wish you all the best and welcome the new recipients of the newsletter.

Honored to serve,
Duane Dominy

Subject: Accused Attempted Murderer & Parolee Finis Lewis Arrested by Gang Unit

October 1, 2008

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Gang Unit detectives this afternoon arrested dangerous parolee, gang member and fugitive Finis Lewis, who was hiding out in the J.C. Napier public housing development.
Neighborhood residents actually thanked police and cheered as Lewis was led away.
Lewis, 30, is being charged with attempted murder for opening fire with a rifle on Corey Lanier in the 2400 block of 25th Avenue North on August 15th. Lanier, 30, was shot multiple times, at least once after he fell to the ground.
A search of the J.C. Napier apartment where Lewis was staying resulted in the discovery of an assault-type rifle hidden in a washing machine, a semi-automatic pistol hidden in a child’s room, several pills, money, scales, and ammunition.
Lewis remains under investigation for other violent crimes in Nashville over the past few months.
Lewis registered with the Metropolitan Police Department as an ex-convict in February following his parole from the state prison system. He was sentenced to 14 years in February 2000 for robbery convictions.

*A photograph of Lewis accompanies this media release on the Internet.

9-1-1 CALL TAKERS ASSIST WITH DELIVERY OF FOUR BABIES

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – During the month of September, Metro Emergency Communications Center call takers provided child birth assistance to four callers who couldn’t make it to the hospital in time with an expectant mother. A summary of the calls is detailed below:

• On September 6, ECC call-taker Jackie Vincent received a call from a woman requesting an ambulance for her 16 year-old niece who was having a baby “right now.” Jackie heard the baby crying in the background and proceeded with instructions to clean the baby’s nose and mouth, and to wrap the baby to keep her warm. She instructed the caller to tie the umbilical cord with a shoelace and stay close until the fire department arrived.
When Medic 19 arrived, they transported a healthy baby girl and her mother to Vanderbilt Medical Center and reported everyone was doing well.

• On September 24, call taker Freda Harris received a call from frantic male reporting “she had a baby and it’s on the floor!” The baby could be heard crying in the background. Freda quickly gave him instructions to clean the baby’s mouth and nose, and to wrap the infant to keep him warm. She then instructed the caller, who was the baby’s father, to tie the umbilical cord with a string or a shoelace. The father was then instructed to watch the mother and baby until the responders arrived. When Medic 4 arrived, they found a healthy baby boy and mother. Both were transported to Vanderbilt Medical Center.

Later that same day, call taker Thom Brown received a call from the Matthew Walker Clinic reporting that they had a Spanish speaking female at the facility in labor. The caller reported that the mother was on the way to the hospital and got lost. Thom assisted the caller by instructing them on how to deliver the baby and shortly after the call was received, a baby boy was born. Thom continued the instructions until the responders arrived. Medic 10 transported mother and baby to Metro General ER reporting both were doing well.

• On September 27, call taker trainee Jeff Bolin received a call from a very calm male requesting an ambulance for his wife who just had a baby. The father advised that the baby was completely out and crying could be heard in the back ground. Jeff gave the instructions to clean the baby’s mouth and nose, wrap him up to keep warm and tie the umbilical cord. The caller was instructed to watch the mother and baby closely until responders arrived. When the Medic 10 arrived, they found a healthy baby boy and mother. Both were transported to Vanderbilt Medical Center.
To congratulate these employees, each has been awarded a blue or pink baby pins for their service.

Police and Other News

Dear Resident,
What a amazing few weeks we have had. I completed three weeks of work in 15 days and have just begun getting through the hundreds of emails, phone calls and letters which came in during that time. I'm glad to be back in touch with you. I've included the police reports from Suzanne Stephens below.

To say our community and United States as a whole have been through some recent challenges is a huge understatement. It appears we will continue to be faced with more difficulty as our Federal government work to address the financial mess we are in currently. I would encourage you to share your thoughts about the proposed "bailout" being discussed in Washington DC with your US Senate and House representatives. While this is still a moving target as to what it will include, I am attempting to keep up with the details as they become available. I would welcome your thoughts on the issue, though I will not likely be able to respond directly to each of them. I hope to communicate with each of our elected officials as this process moves forward.

Later today at 4pm, there will be a public hearing before the Planning Commission regarding the Bakertown/Antioch Pike Neighborhood SP. Feel free to attend and share your thoughts for or against at the Metro Southeast (Old Genesco) Building. Councilman-at-Large Charlie Tygard will be bringing this proposal forward as my property was included and I will recuse myself.

I will be working with the Hands on Nashville organization as project coordinator at Apollo Middle School this Saturday morning from 8am 'til noon. We could still use a couple of volunteers. If interested, please go to www.hon.org and select "Browse school project sites now!," then scroll down to project number 5. I have been told that the $25 registration fee can be waved or reduced if needed. We will have a lot of fun and make a difference for our community school.

Please pardon this shameless plug. For those that may be interested in a "Smart Savings Card™" commonly called a SmartCard, my daughters are selling them. These are great deals that include discounts or deals at Home Depot, BestBuy, OfficeMax, Applebee's, plus many other stores and restaurants. Details can be found at www.smartsavingslink.com. Call to get your order in before they stop selling them.

There will be meetings seeking public input regarding the Harding Place Extension next week. I have received this notice regarding the Harding Place, Ext. courtesy of 53rd District House Representative, Janis Sontany:

Harding Place, Ext. Official Meetings
Sept. 30 – 6:00 p.m. Hickman Elementary School
Oct. 2 – 6:00 p.m. Una Elementary School
These meetings will be very important with comments being recorded and
included as part of the official file.

Both meetings will cover the same information.

Some issues have been:
• The closing of Old Murfreesboro Road.
• Four additional traffic lights from the intersection of Smith Springs Road and Old Murfreesboro Road, and Murfreesboro Road to the proposed new intersection of Murfreesboro Road at Faircloth/Town Park.
• Wasting taxpayers money to acquire land and to build an additional lane on Murfreesboro Road when Old Murfreesboro is already handling that traffic.
• Fair price for right-of-way properties and other issues regarding right-of-way.
• Destroying the environment including old-growth trees.
Please let your neighbors know of these two upcoming and critical meetings to be held on the Harding Place Extension.

Many of you may have received a card or letter from the Planning Department about the Rural Hill Road "Detailed Neighborhood Design Plan." The Kick Off Meeting will be held Wednesday, October 8 at St. Ignatius Church on Bell Rd. This plan will establish a community development blueprint to help protect the values of your homes and provide for responsible and meaningful growth. Meetings will be held throughout this fall and into spring. I encourage everyone to participate. Other meetings will be as below:
Meeting 2 - Visioning Workshop - Monday, October 20 - Apollo Middle School
Meeting 3 - Draft Concept Plan Presentation - Thursday, December 4 - St. Ignatius
Meeting 4 - Draft Detailed Land Use Policy Plan Workshop - Thursday, January 29 - St. Ignatius
Meeting 5 - Draft Building Form Plan Workshop - Thursday, February 19 - St. Ignatius
Meeting 6 - Draft Plan Presentation - Thursday, March 19 - St. Ignatius
Check out this link for updates as the plan progresses. http://www.nashville.gov/mpc/index.htm

Welcome to the new recipients of the newsletter. Feel free to share this with any of your neighbors.

All the best,

Major Event Information

* Significant Event *
South A-Detail was tied up for several hours on multiple calls of trees and power lines down as we experienced a storm system that came through Nashville. 20-30 MPH winds with gusts up to 50 mph hit the area causing a lot of tree and power line damage where patrol cars had to stand-by and wait for NES and OEM, in some cases for hours. Our calls for service increased dramatically. Alarm calls increased as well due to the weather having set them off. Also because of the storm system we had an increase in traffic accidents.
